Rye MP champions disabled people at work

Rye MP MIchael Foster is calling for greater support for disabled people in employment.

Mr Foster joined forces with the Disability Alliance and the Royal National Institute for the Blind to lobby for policy improvements to ensure that people who become disabled whilst in work don't lose their employment and move on to benefits.

He said "I am proud of the recent strides the Government has made in introducing anti-discrimination legislation but am nevertheless concerned that hard working people are at risk of losing their employment because of disability.

"Every year 25,000 people permanently leave employment due to work-related illness or disability. "With early intervention and the right help, flexibility and support from their employers many of these people could remain in, or return to, work.

"It is for these reasons that I have put my name to a Parliamentary motion stating that greater awareness is needed amongst employers regarding their duties under the Disability Discrimination Act.

"They should be doing everything realistically possible to ensure disabled people do not fall out of employment."
