Spring fair raises £1,150 to help Ugandan mothers and babies

In spite of overcast skies, Knitting for Kisiizi's spring fair and coffee morning proved another success, raising £1,150.

The event was held once again at the attractive North Lodge in Battle, through the generosity of Mr and Mrs Graham Bishop, who went out of their way to give a warm welcome to knitters and supporters of the registered charity.

Knitting for Kisiizi sends aid to Kisiizi Hospital in S W Uganda, chiefly in the form of home-knitted items for mothers and babies.

Since KfK's small start just nine years ago, more than 1,200 2kg parcels have been sent by post.

Transport was then switched to container ship and to date more than 1,100 banana boxes of aid have been sent by this method.

Don Vear, of Knitting for Kisiizi, said: "We are most grateful to Mr and Mrs Bishop and the many who helped us to reach such a magnificent sum.

"Our aid is much appreciated in Kisiizi and the money will help us carry on our work for which there is an on-going need.

"Each banana box costs us 15 to send."
