Toilets must be open for bonfire
THERE are fears that if public toilets are closed in Rye on Bonfire Night it could create a public health hazard.
Rye Town Council is asking Rother to ensure that the toilet at Crownfields, outside the rail station is keep them open in the evening during the celebrations on Saturday November 10.
Cllr Mike Eve said: “These toilets have to be kept open. It would be a public health disaster if they were to be closed on bonfire night.”
Rye Rother councillor Lord Ampthill said: “I agree that we need those loos to be open on that evening.”
There is still anger in the town over Rother’s move to no longer run a number of public toilets in the town, including the one by the station.
This could result in some toilets being closed if no-one else can be found to take over their maintenance.
Rother say they are faced with cutting costs, but Rye councilllor Mary Smith said: “Rye’s toilets have not ben up to standard for a very long time .
“We have seen a lack of spending when there was money there to being them up to the standard required for a civilised society and visiting tourists.
“To use recession as an excuse now is just not acceptable.”
Cllr Mike Eve said: “Southern Railway is making a lot of money from the car park and coach park. Perhaps we should talk to them and ask if they are prepared to take on the maintenance of the toilets near the station”
Cllr Angharad Davies, from Rother’s Devolution Working Group said: “We have limited funds to spend on public conveniences.”
