VOLUNTEERS from the Rye and Battle area have been praised by Sussex Police after clocking up two years voluntary service.

East Sussex Division held a special award ceremony to honour the hard work of the volunteers who have assisted with neighbourhood policing.

Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Nick Wilkinson thanked the volunteers for the contribution they make and said: "There have been 4000 less crimes in the last 12 months compared to the previous 12 months, 1000 more offenders caught and pubic satisfaction is up. All of which is achieved by team working and all our volunteers play a significant part in making this possible.

"Policing is all about working together to make it happen. The help provided by our volunteers is very much appreciated and they are an invaluable asset to the division."

Laurie Bush, deputy chair of Sussex Police Authority. told the volunteers: "You all play an integral part in supporting our key principles of Neighbourhood Policing; for officers to be visible, accessible and responsive; to serve the community; and tackle crime and disorder. Each individual volunteer contributes so much to the division, for which I thank you immensely."
