Waste Partnership nets award
The new joint waste initiative set up to save five local councils in East Sussex more than £30m has won a prestigious national award.
The East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership scooped a silver award at the annual Improvement and Efficiency Awards, organised by social enterprise group Improvement and Efficiency Social Enterprise.
The partnership was named runner up in the Transformation in Waste and Environment category and was beaten to the top spot only by the Metropolitan Police for its work at the Olympics.
The award recognised the most progress in developing waste management and environmental services. The waste partnership is between Eastbourne, Rother, Hastings, and Wealden councils, together with East Sussex County Council.
The scheme has achieved a significant saving in the combined waste collection costs at the same time as delivering an improved service to the customers and setting ambitious recycling targets. The contract will secure savings of £30m over ten years and offer a better service to almost 430,000 people.
Cllr Gill Mattock, portfolio holder for finance at Eastbourne Borough Council, who represented the partnership at the iESE awards in London, said: “Winning this award is fantastic recognition of the innovative and cost-saving approach to waste collection all members of the partnership have shown.
“Judges were clearly impressed with how this contract will deliver not only a more cost effective service, but also an improved service with ground-breaking solutions to encourage more recycling.”
The East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership contract begins on April 1 but will be introduced at different times in the coming months, starting with Eastbourne Borough Council and Wealden District Council in July.
A full programme of communication and engagement will help educate the public on the changes they can expect in their districts.
