Whisky fan helps break world record

BATTLE man David Bates played a key role in breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest whisky bottle, as unveiled by The Famous Grouse in Crieff, Scotland, in August.

Mr Bates took part in an online auction to win the opportunity to be the first to fill the giant bottle, with all proceeds from his bid being donated to The Soldiers Charity.

The Famous Grouse smashed the existing record with the unique bottle holding a huge 228 litres of its blended whisky.

The Guinness World Record was awarded by an official adjudicator in front of fans at Famous Grouse’s 107th birthday celebrations, having exceeded its target of 200 litres comfortably.

The bottle stands at an impressive five feet five inches tall and holds the equivalent of 9,120 drams of whisky.

It took three hours to fill the enormous bottle with help from a number of VIP guests and fans, including Mr Bates.

The bottle will now sit proudly on permanent display at The Famous Grouse Experience for visitors taking a tour at the distillery to see.

David Bates said: “The Famous Grouse has been my favourite tipple for many years.

“It was a different but nevertheless enjoyable experience helping to fill a bottle rather than emptying one!

“I would like to thank The Famous Grouse for donating a wonderful prize to ABF Soldiers Charity.”
