WINCHELSEA played a key role in an historic event at Dover last week.

A ceremony at the Maison Dieu saw Mayors from all 14 Cinque Port Towns gathering to see Winchelsea take over the Speakership of the Cinque Ports from Hastings.

The main reason for the ceremony was to formally approve the Loyal Address which will to be sent from the Confederation of the Cinque Ports to Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee Anniversary.

Following the meeting a reception was held at Dover Castle where the newly appointed Speaker, Wimnchelsea Mayor Roger Neaves gave a speech to the assembly of 250 dignitaries from Kent, East Sussex and the Armed Forces. During this address the Speaker presented the Loyal Address to the Lord Warden, Admiral the Lord Boyce.

Lord Boyce will deliver the address to Buckingham Palace and will be accompanied by the Speaker, the Registrar and Seneschal.

The final event of a memorable day was a display of Beating the Retreat by the Band of the Ghurkhas.
