Winchelsea landmarks could be used in event of civil emergencies
KEY buildings in historic Winchelsea have been ear-marked as centres to be used in the event of a civil emergency.
Now a grant has been secured by the Rye Neighbourhood Police Team from the Police Property Fund which has been used by the Winchelsea Emergency Group to pay for special signs giving the out-of-hours contact details of the keyholders of St Thomas’s Church, the New Hall and the Court Hall.
Winchelsea councillor Richard Comotto said: “This information is intended for emergency services, particularly in a civil contingency, when these buildings may be required as reception centres.
“It will also be useful for members of the public who see something happening at these locations which they feel should be reported.
“The idea came from a forum of village emergency groups in Rother last year.”
The Rye Neighbourhood Police Team recently also arranged grants from the Police Property Fund for the Church and Winchelsea Neighbourhood Watch to fund the purchase of a special marker for lead following a number of lead thefts.
The marker covers the lead, and any lead thieves, with a gel that can be detected with ultra violet light and contains synthetic DNA that in unique to the lead’s location.
Most buildings in Winchelsea have had their lead marked in this way.
