The equipment in Coronation Gardens in Battle is past its best and community group Play for Coronation Gardens (PFCG) has been trying to drum up the £60,000 needed to give the playground a much-needed make over.

Housing association Amicushorizon and Rother District Council are to provide £12,500 each.

But a failed bid for further funding has left the project some £35,000 short.

Justin Lay, who is supporting the project, explained: “The PFCG association recently applied for a Biffaward and were unsuccessful on the grounds that Biffa have already supported another project nearby.

“The PFCG is planning to apply for another grant with Veolia and hope to be successful, but with any of these applications for grants it always helps to show community support for the project.

“PFCG have also submitted for a £500 grant with the Battle Town Council which is to be opined on in the next few weeks by a sub-committee.”

English Wine Tasting Tours and Essential Wine School have teamed up to help raise funds for the project as part of next month’s 1066 Wine and Food Festival.

An all English Wine and English Cheese Tasting event will be held to support the playground project at Powdermills Hotel on May 20.

Tickets cost £45 per person and can be purchased from the Battle Deli or on 01424 777 111.

Raffle tickets are also on sale, priced at £2.50, with top prizes including a mixed case of English wine, a wine tour and tasting at Bluebell Vineyards, dinner for two at Nobles and vouchers for Battle Deli and Carr-Taylor Wines.
