A DOG rehoming centre has re-named one of its four-legged friends in honour of a Battle sportsman who took home gold in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this week.

A stray Staffordshire bull terrier at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has a new sporting namesake in Steven Scott who triumphed in the men’s double trap shooting.

Battersea is naming some of its current 400 dogs and 250 cats after every home nations gold medallist at this year’s Games.

One-and-a-half year old Steven was found on a field in East London, before he was brought to Battersea.

Head of operations Carly Whyborn said: “We really hope Steven the Staffie will find a loving home and can celebrate our men’s double trap shooting champion’s success with finding a new family.

“Steven definitely lives up to his namesake – he’s agile, intelligent and clearly has his eyes on the prize of a happy future. Here at Battersea we hope by naming some of our animals after our champion gold medallists it will give dogs like Steven the second chance they’re looking for and so deserve.”

If you can give Steven a home, call Battersea on 0843 509 4444.
