Over thirty girls at Robertsbridge Community College were treated to a cricket masterclass by England ladies cricket heroine, Lydia Greenway, who visited the College as an ambassador for “Chance2Shine”.

Lydia has enjoyed amazing success in the England ladies squad, perhaps her highlight was scoring the winning runs to secure the Ashes against Australia in the summer of this year. Lydia is a left handed bat, but a right handed off-break bowler with an impressive record behind her.

Having debuted for England in 2003, she has now clocked up 11 Tests, 62 T-20 Internationals and 112 One Day Internationals. She is rated by many as being the best fielder in women’s cricket. She has recently returned from Playing at Port of Spain and when not competing for her country plays for Kent.

The session involved plenty of energetic warm ups with ball handling, catching and batting skills all combined in a series of relays. A short relay batting game involving two teams, with Lydia delivering the bowling, concluded each of the three introductory sessions.

Lydia was supported on the day by Charlotte Burton, Women’s Director on the Sussex Cricket Board responsible for the development of Ladies cricket across the county.

A reward for each of the girls taking part in the training session was a ticket to a free trial with a ladies cricket squad in the local area.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Lydia, girls at RCC are now clamouring for the P.E. Department to introduce girls cricket to the curriculum at the college, and they can’ t wait for the new Community Sports Hall to open, when they will be able to develop their skills in the nets.

Judging by comments on twitter Charlotte enjoyed her time at Robertsbridge as well; “Last 2 days have been great, seeing kids inspired.” “Great 2 days working with Lydia, inspirational, great with all the kids and I am sure an impact on cricket in Sussex.
