The Rye Community Food & Wildlife Garden is hoping for £300 from the Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund which would cover the insurance bill.

The garden on Love Lane is not currently making any income and steering committee member Pip Al-Khafaji said the money would mean they do not have to raise the funds themselves.

“I keep a beady eye out for funding opportunities and I saw the Galaxy fund,” she said.

“As it’s such a small sum of money, I applied for it to cover the Public Liability insurance fee which we have to have or we can’t have members of the public in the garden.

“Plus it would mean we don’t have to raise the funds ourselves this year and it would be great to replenish the coffers.”

Five bids are successful every week, with four decided by a judges panel and one ‘People’s Choice Award’ which is given to the application with the most votes.

The scheme ends on February 28, so there are only a few more weeks for the garden group to secure the funding.

The garden opened in August, 2014, and is available for anyone to enjoy, either by helping on a project or just to sit amid the newly planted orchard trees and shrubs.

The latest project is to build a Hugel Kulture raised bed from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, February 20.

This will provide an area for vegetables that does not need watering due to the technique of layering wood and soil in a pit.

In the future, Pip said the steering group is looking to market the garden as a place where people needed adult social care could use it for therapy or just some gentle gardening.

The plan is to appoint a co-ordinator to organise hiring out the garden to third parties to generate some income.
