Rye housing development architect receives prestigious award

The architects behind the new building on Cinque Ports Street was among five others to receive a Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) South East 2016 Award at Ascot Racecourse on Thursday, April 28.

Rye-based Jonathan Dunn Architects (JDA) designed the development consisting of eight flats, a detached three-bed house, two bed-flat and two retail units.

RIBA regional director James Robinson said the awards prove the amount of talent there is in the south east.

“We are very lucky to have such outstanding buildings entered for the RIBA Awards this year,” he said. “The standard and variety of the entries is great to see.

“The entries also demonstrate the fantastic amount of design talent in and around the south east.

“The region has many wonderful buildings and the winners this year show that they are still being built.”

The building was chosen out of 11 shortlisted for the award in March from an original 32 entrants and the awards ceremony was compered by the journalist and broadcaster Kirsty Lang.

The other winners were Kaner Olette Architects’ for its Gateway Café in Peacehaven, New House, in East Sussex, by BBM Sustainable Design, Hudson Architect’s Le Petit Fort in Jersey, North Vat in Kent by Rodic Davidson Architects and Sanei Hopkins Architects’ The Narrow House, in East Sussex.

JDA won the same award last year for the Kino cinema on Lion Street.

Regional award winners will be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, the results of which will be announced in June.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA national award-winning buildings later in the year.
