Rye is running out of burial space

Urgent action is needed to find more burial plots in Rye with the cemetery running out of space.

Rye councillors say Rother Council has been aware of the problem for some years and is now calling for action to address the situation.

Rye district councillor Sam Souster said: “At the end of the day you cannot keep going on until you run out of space to bury people. This needs more urgency.”

The issue was raised by Cllr Granville Bantick who said: “The cemetery is getting full and we want to know what other land we can use for burial.”

Rother Council said this week that it was in negotiations with a local landowner to provide additional space for burials.
