Staplecross Pre-school Playgroup sent Her Majesty a card for her 90th birthday on April 21.

But the staff and 16 kids were taken by surprise when the postman arrived with a special delivery — an envelope with the royal insignia.

Inside, Queen Elizabeth II had sent them a card with her picture, thanking them for their ‘kind words’, as well as letter personally thanking the pre-school from lady in waiting Philippa de Pass.

Manager Jay Perkins said the birthday card was to teach the children about the real world and the response was a huge bonus.

“The children were really excited to see the Queen’s face as she’d put a photo in the card,” she said.

“They were made up to think they got a reply which we weren’t expecting.

“We made the birthday card for the Queen to teach the children about were they live and we went to the Post Office to buy stamps and everything.

“It’s all part of learning for the children but to get a reply was really exciting.”

The letter from Philippa de Pass, addressed to the children at the playgroup, said the Queen wished to thank them for their ‘splendid card’ and gave them her best wishes.

“The Queen was very touched by the care you have taken to make a card for her and Her Majesty greatly appreciates your kind words,” it read.
