Mountfield

90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY: If the Queen had dropped into Mountfield Court on Sunday afternoon, she'd have found a right good spread. There was live music, a very well patronised bar, and equally well patronised BBQ, the tea tent doing brisk business in cuppas and cakes, there were sheep and lambs, shetland pony rides, the usual lively tombola and raffles, village green games, terrier racing, children and dogs everywhere, and more. The rain in the morning was awful and it only stopped about two minutes before the 1.00 kick off. Everyone who went had a great time, mainly meeting old friends and neighbours, often not seen for far too long, so it was a brilliant social occasion.

Big congratulations to everyone who pitched in with time, organisation, signage, baking, ponies, sheep, and all the other things that make a successful event. Thanks are due to Lucinda and Simon for their hospitality (for the second day running — they’d hosted a day for St Michael’s the previous day!).

AND YET: The weather in the morning was pretty awful but we couldn’t help thinking that all those people who went and had a good time catching up with old friends could have had twice as good a time if more people had turned up. It didn’t look to us like three villages celebrating an event that will never happen again in their lifetimes.

CLLR NAME-DROPPER: Caroline Hollamby was conspicuous by her absence at Her Majesty’s party but she has written to say that “whilst celebrations were ongoing on Sunday and the rain and wind were beating down, I managed to complete my 68 mile cycle ride in just over 5 and a half hours. I even managed to cross the finish line with a chip time of 21 minutes faster than Davina, including puncture stop on Doctors Hill and a re-fuel and wring-out at Hooe!” We find the detail about the “re-fuel” deeply suspicious and have no idea who is meant by “Davina” but congratulate Caroline on the ride and the money raised.

BIG SCREEN SOCIAL NIGHT: A final reminder about tomorrow’s Big Screen Social Night (Saturday June 18th) with the screening of “The Imitation Game” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightly, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Tuppence Middleton and others. Again, invite friends and family. It will be the usual £5.00 donation with complimentary film and refreshments. Doors open 7.30 pm.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: A reminder of the three key dates for the Mountfield Horticultural Society. First, Sunday’s coffee morning and plant sale at 4, Eatenden Lane at 10.30 on (Sunday June 19th). Go along and sell some plants, buy some plants, have coffee and lovely cake — and a good natter. Then, the annual outing to RHS Wisley is on Sunday July 3rd, open to members and non-members. Contact Celia Morris on 01580 880458. Finally, the Annual Flower Show is on Saturday July 30th Village Hall. A final reminder to the photographers that the four open classes this year are “Country Wildlife”, “Shrub in Flower”, “Sunset or Sunrise” and “Bridge” plus an under-16 class entitled “Mountfield Village”.

DANNY OVERY: There’s no need for us to add anything to what appears elsewhere in this edition of the Observer except to pass on the comment from someone who went to the cremation and the Village Hall afterwards: “It felt a real privilege to have been a part of it.”
