MP to help mark Fairlight cliff protection scheme's success

Amber Rudd MP will be attending Fairlight Preservation Trust’s topping-out ceremony of the 270m rock berm below Fairlight Cove at the village hall at 2.30pm.

The cliff protection is hoped to have saved 180 houses that would have been lost within a century, and was made possible through the £150,000 raised.

Through partnership funding with local organisations and groups, plus a £75k contribution from the Fairlight Parish Council, the trust was able to obtain the necessary funding from the Environment Agency’s Flood Defence Grant in Aid.

Around 25,000 tonnes of Norwegian granite rocks were delivered by sea to complete the construction of a rock berm to fill the gap between the two existing barriers. Work took about 12 weeks with contractors JT Mackley working at low tide with deliveries of the rocks at high tide, day and night.

A parish council spokesman said this is a hugely positive outcome for the village of Fairlight and its residents and it is grateful to everyone who made it possible.
