As we approach Christmas, there’s a lot of opportunity to buy local, handmade gifts. This Saturday, there is a Christmas Fayre in Northiam Village Hall from 10am until 2pm, with Father Christmas (no less) and many varied stalls. Free admission, with door donations to Northiam Village Hall Trust.

There is also a Craft Fair in Brede Village Hall, also 10am to 2pm with free admission. Lots of wonderful ideas for your Christmas presents.

This month’s Boot Sale will be held on Sunday in the Village Hall 9am until noon, please book your pitch with Marie Edwards – 01797 253264.

The Over 60s will be enjoying a spot of Bingo at their meeting this week – on Tuesday at 2pm in the Village Hall.

On Tuesday evening, Shirley Saeed will be giving a cookery demonstration in the Church Hall. As well as teaching us how to make authentic curry, Shirley will talk about spices. Tickets are just £5 and will include tasters of curry and Hastings Brewery’s Blonde beer. Phone 253375 to book your place, as numbers are limited.

There will be a Coffee Morning in aid of St Michael’s Hospice on 23rd, with home made cakes, bring and buy, gifts etc. Please pop in to the Village Hall between 10am and noon.

As we reach the end of the Bonfire season, we are really looking forward to Northiam’s first year as a member of Sussex Bonfire Council. Our Procession and Firework Display will be on Saturday 23rd November, so please spread the word! Even though everyone should have had a leaflet through the door, there are still people who don’t know it is happening! I hope they don’t live on Main Street!!

Make a note in your diary, and invite your friends over – it should be good! There will be visiting Societies, including drummers and you can watch the torchlit parade from Main Street then follow the procession onto the field where there will be a large bonfire and a firework display. Collectors along the route will be rattling buckets in aid of our three charities this year – Northiam Pre-school, Northiam Scouts and Frewen College.

The parade starts at 7.30pm, and we would be grateful if people could park cars off the route if at all possible. The parades tend to be quite noisy, so please take precautions with animals and young children.

The Village Hall Trust are holding another Book Sale on Saturday 30th November, with a range of books and jigsaws, many suitable for presents or to keep for your own Christmas pleasure.

In the evening the Bonfire Society are holding a Quiz Night with Damien and Gina Sanderson back in the village to test our grey matter! Tickets are £8 per person to include food in the interval. Please call 253375 to book a table of eight.

There will be some extra flu vaccination clinics at Northiam surgery, on Wednesday 20th, Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th November, and a final one on Monday 9th December. They will run from 5pm and will need an appointment.

The Trustees of the Iden and Frewen Educational Foundation will be considering applications for grants at the next meeting, to be held on 25th November.

Cash grants may be made for educational purposes to residents of Northiam who are under 25 years of age, undertaking further or higher education, an apprenticeship or equivalent, or sporting activities at county level. Further details and application forms may be obtained from the Clerk. Please telephone 01797-253254.
