Post Offices – Symbol of Labour's Failure

It is incredible that the systematic closure of our post offices is continuing round the country.

In Rye the closure of our own Tilling Green post office is devastating to the neighbourhood, particularly for the older people in our community. Their closure is a failure of political direction and leadership at a national level. Make no mistake – post office closures is part of this Government's policy. The Post Office Ltd entered into a contract with the Government for the closure of 2,500 post offices. Even where a post office is saved, another is culled to make up the numbers. It is political - it is part of Labour's policy and it is shame on them.

We seem to be in the grip of a failure of Labour leadership as daily ex and current members of the Labour party line up to point out Gordon Brown's inadequacies. Brown's failures are thrown into particularly stark relief by the success of Tony Blair in holding his party together. It is of course a question of succession. Certainly, the Conservatives had their own problems with finding a leader to follow Margaret Thatcher. Her potent mix of policies and personality made her a remarkable Prime Minister. Following a remarkable leader is a challenge for any politician. Churchill famously called Attlee, "a modest man who had much to be modest about". Actually he held the post war Government together admirably. And it was Anthony Eden, a man who had been so full of promise, whose premiership became so identified with the Suez fiasco, in much the same way as Iraq epitomised the failures of Tony Blair.

There is no sense with Gordon Brown, that the Labour party have any concerns about real life for us all. We have post offices closing, taxes rising and costs increasing. With food inflation soaring, petrol both scarce and expensive, and mortgage rates staying or rising, they still talk about an inflation rate of 2%. Excuse me? All our shopping bills are up, so let's have a little more honesty about the current state of the economy, and a little more awareness about policies to preserve our communities – not devastate them with closure of essential services.
