Rye’s unique history needs preserving

The Rye Mayor has led the call over saving the Landgate Arch - now the town needs to respond.

Rye handed much of its crown jewels over to Rother when the old Borough was disbanded in 1974 and quite frankly the town’s family heirlooms have not been treated with the care and respect they deserve.

The way that one of Rye’s most iconic landmarks has been neglected is deplorable.

The tower was built to protect Rye from marauding French invaders intent on levelling the town. Now it looks as though Rother is intent on finishing the job the French started.

The summer season may be behind us but Rye shows no sign of slowing down. No sooner has the superb Rye Arts Festival finished but we now have Wild Boar Week to enjoy.

Not only is it a great showcase for the quality of the town’s pubs and restaurants but offers a diverse array of other entertainment from live music to comedy and a treasure trail .

As if that is not enough, thousands of people are set to line the streets next month when bonfire celebrations take place.

We are lucky to live in such a vibrant and colourful area.
