SPECIAL OLYMPICS: I have received the following report from Sandra Farley - The Farley family are pleased to report that both Thomas Farley and Harry Farley have returned from the Special Olympic World Games 2015 held in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. sporting World Games Silver Medals for Judo. The whole sporting event was amazing. They first spent a few days in the host town, Calabasos, where they stayed on a ranch. They moved to the University of California, Los Angeles for the sporting week, known as its abbreviated ‘’UCLA’’. The Judo event was on site at UCLA in the Students Activity Centre. In the grounds of both UCLA and the University of Southern California were Olympic Villages, nicely named as Festivals, where there were lots of free and fun activities. The medal award ceremonies were held in these arena’s outside. The Judo competition itself was held over 4 days. Harry had 5 fights, the first being disqualified as his opponent did a disallowed ‘hold’. This had to be re-fought, which made Harry apprehensive. He lost this fight, but went on to win his next 3 fights, securing his Silver medal. Thomas, on the last day of the Judo event, fought 4 fights. He lost his first, but also went onto win the further 3 fights, securing his Silver Medal in his category. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies were held in the Los Angeles Coliseum, an amazing stadium. Michelle Obama, wife of the U.S. President, was at the Opening Ceremony. Both ceremonies were full of different acts, which included Stevie Wonder, and a variety of well-known performers and speakers, too many to mention in this short report. There was also a Family picnic, which sounded like there would be a blanket on the ground! Far from it, with tables laid out, a band performing while food served. Then a larger stage set-up in the next part of the park, where the chairs were set out as a theatre. The founders of the Special Olympic movement, the Schriver family, were present. The event became another outdoors concert, with entertainment throughout the evening, and food tents all around to continue tasting the fine foods of Southern California. The boys even managed 3 days with their family. One day, relaxing at the hotel where their parents, Sandra and Mark, were staying close-by. Swimming in the pool and exercising in the Gymnasium. The other two days, spent at Disneyland, Anaheim which was celebrating its 60th Anniversary, and to Universal Studios, Hollywood, which had a special ‘’Fast and Furious’’ movie event, in addition to its usual rides and attractions. The boys were both interviewed several times for TV, and felt quite famous. The Farley family had a great experience, and wish to thank all the local people in our village, and surrounding area, who financed the boys required monetary payments to be able to go as part of the selected GB Team, and for the training weekends prior to the World sporting event. Peasmarsh now has two current World Judo Silver medalists. Thomas also being a current European champion, winning Gold medal in Antwerp in 2014, and both boys being National champs. They have followed in their older brother, James’s, footsteps, who had been a World Judo champion in Dublin 2003 and went onto win medals representing Great Britain in China in 2006. James and their dad, Mark, are both Judo Coaches. It is just left to thank their Special Olympic Coaches, Jo Imrie and Paul Everest. Paul also being their Senior Coach at Westerleigh Judokwai, whose members and Coaches must also be thanked very much, without the training at the Club, the boys would not have had this wonderful sporting opportunity.
