New boundaries for Rother District Council agreed

Final plans for a shake-up of Rother District Council's ward boundaries are set to be agreed.

Currently the authority has 20 different wards, but the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) is proposing an increase to 21.

The number of councillors would remain the same at 38, but there would be four single member wards and 17 two-member wards.

The single member wards would be Robertsbridge, Brede and Udimore, South Battle and Telham, and Catsfield and Crowhurst.

In Bexhill only minor changes are set to be made to the boundaries, with Bexhill Old Town renamed Bexhill Old Town and Worsham, while Bexhill St. Michaels is set to be come Bexhill Pebsham and St. Michaels.

The current ward of Battle Town ward is set to be split in two, with the northern part paired with Netherfield and Whatlington.

Rye would be increased to include Winchelsea, with Eastern Rother, which includes Iden, Camber and Rye Harbour, gaining Peasmarsh.

Sedlescombe and Westfield would be a new ward, while Southern Rother would be made up of Fairlight and Icklesham. A new Northern Rother ward includes Northiam, Bodiam, and Ewhurst Green. The two wards in the north-western part of the district will be Hurst Green and Ticehurst, and Burwash and The Weald.

Colin Mellors, chair of the LGCBE, said: “Across the county, we have sought to balance the views expressed to us by local people with the criteria we must apply when we are deciding on new electoral arrangements.

“As such, we believe these recommendations deliver electoral equality for voters as well as reflecting the identities of communities in East Sussex.”

If approved by Parliament changes would come in from May 2019.
