Rother District Council garden waste collection fee is still below national and regional average despite a recent increase of 40 per cent, a new study has found.
But out of the 50 councils in the south east that do charge for the garden bin collection, the average cost is £44.45 – 27 per cent more than Rother’s fee – according to gardening retailer Mantis’ research.
The UK average charge is £41.32 per year and Mantis’ managing director David Goose said: “We hope that garden waste collection charges are encouraging more people to take up home composting, which is the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of organic waste.
“However, there have been concerns that fees will increase fly-tipping, or divert more recyclable waste to landfill.”
Three quarters of south east council charge for kerbside garden waste collection and Rother’s £35 is joint-36th most expensive.
Lewes District Council charges the most in the region, £70, while Mid Sussex and Hart District Councils take second and third spot with £65 and £63.75 respectively.
Just 24 per cent of local authorities in the area offer a garden waste collection service without an annual charge — the lowest proportion in the country.
However, the Mantis findings suggest that other areas could soon catch up, as adoption of garden bin taxes has recently rocketed.
The number of British councils charging has doubled to 160 (42 per cent) in just five years, with the average fee standing at £41.32 per year — 18 per cent more than the Rother’s.
