A budding cartoonist hopes to realise her dream of going to art college in the USA where her favourite television show is based.

Maddie Wright, of Harbour Road, Rye Harbour, said she started drawing her own comics about two years ago after watching the American cartoon Family Guy.

The programme is set in Rhode Island and created by Seth MacFarlane.

Maddie said she hopes to study there as his programme has helped to uncover her passion for drawing.

“I first got into it because of Seth MacFarlane as I started watching Family Guy and loved it so I started drawing the characters,” she said.

“I draw a lot of comic books during school and I get ideas in school. I want to be an animator because I love it and it’s fun.”

Maddie said the comic she is working on at the minute is called Obnoxious Ollie and is based on a boy who always gets into trouble.

Another one of her cartoon strips is called Fat Cat and Dopey Dog. The latest instalment shows Fat Cat stealing Dopey Dog’s pie but then the dog sees lots more.

She also considers herself a bit of a comedian too – for example: Why did Adele cross the road? To say hello from the other side.

Maddie’s mother Rebecca Sutton is proud of her daughter for dreaming big and is really impressed by her drawings.

“I think they are brilliant – you don’t get many children who naturally draw, they’re usually watching a computer screen,” she said.

“She’s so determined to be an animator and you just have to encourage her.”
Maddie contacted the Observer asking if she could do a series of comics for the paper.

Although that was not possible, Rebecca said Maddie just wants people to see her drawings as she’s so proud of them.

“She just wanted to get out there and let people know what a good drawer she is and hopefully she can do it when she’s older,” Rebecca said.

Maddie’s grandmother Theresa Sutton said she idolises MacFarlane and her drawings are amazing.

“While she’s watching those shows she sits and draws cartoons which is quite amazing really,” Theresa said.

“She wants to be a cartoonist and she just loves her drawing.

“I think it’s absolutely phenomenal and she’s got them all hanging on her wall.

“Most teenagers just like to sit and listen to pop music but she loves to draw.”
