An 84 year old Rye man died when his car left the road and hit a tree on the A259 at Icklesham on Thursday afternoon.

The blue Nissan Note had been travelling east when it collided with undergrowth on the nearside, crossed the carriageway and an adjacent lay-by before hitting the tree shortly before 5.15pm.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, having apparently been taken ill at the wheel. His front seat passenger, a 66-year-old woman, also from Rye, suffered minor facial bruising.

A yellow Renault Clio that had been following the Nissan, driven by a 17-year-old man from Rye, was damaged by debris.

The coroner for East Sussex has been informed.
