A bid to buy a 71-acre field near Rye to stop it from being auctioned has been rejected by the council.

A group of residents offered Rother District Council the full £70,000 guide price for Camber Fields through the Rye Fund before it is sold on Monday (May 9).

But the council declined the bid to keep it fair as there is a lot of interest in the plot off New Road but encouraged the group to participate in the auction.

“The forthcoming auction of this piece of land has already generated a number of enquiries, therefore in the interests of being fair, open and transparent, we have decided to proceed with the auction for the site,” a council spokesman said.

“However, we would strongly encourage the group to submit its offer to the auctioneer and to take part in next week’s auction.”
