Police were called to central St Leonards on Wednesday (August 3) after receiving reports that a woman was threatening people with a knife.

Sussex Police said meat had been stolen from a butcher’s shop in the area and a woman was in possession of a knife.

Police officers went to King’s Road at around 11.20am.

They said the woman was found in a nearby shop and arrested.

The meat and knife were recovered and nobody was injured in the incident, police said.

Chantelle Williams, 37, unemployed, of The Close, Rye, was due to appear in custody at Brighton Magistrates Court yesterday (Thursday, August 4), charged with theft and with making threats with a knife.

A 24-year-old St Leonards woman, arrested on suspicion of theft and possession of a knife, was interviewed and released on police bail until August 16 while enquiries continue.
