Saxonwood WI
SAXONWOOD WI met in the St Valery Room, Memorial Halls, Battle on Wednesday February 11 at 7.30pm.
On that evening we had superb instruction on the skills of ART CLAY SILVER making which was led by speaker Joy Funnell from Hastings. Joy clearly and with admirable ease, showed us all the steps from a little piece of " modelling" silver clay to remarkably beautiful hand made silver jewellery, chains, pendants and ear rings.
Joy also had on show striking enamel and Dichroic glass pieces of jewellery. The silver is reclaimed from
re- cycled industrial waste, blended with paste which makes it easy to handle and mould into varying shapes; it is produced in Japan. If the finished piece of silver weighs more than 7.78 gms it is necessary to have it hall marked at the Assay Office in London.
Beware - the laws on assaying are ancient and you could be facing imprisonment if you disobey this law!
Thank you so much Joy for sharing your skills with us. Our enthusiasm was such that I'm sure it will lead us to 'having a go' ourselves under Joy's instruction of course and becoming designers of our own Art Clay Silver jewellery!
The competition was a small silver object. 1st Brenda; a baby's silver rattle. 2nd Sue; a small silver pendant. 3rd; Elizabeth; a small silver gravy ladle.
