Children will be scrambling for hot pennies in Rye on Monday May 18 when the town holds its unique Mayor Making ceremony.

The newly elected Mayor will be throwing pennies from an upper window of Rye Town Hall to children in Market Street below.

The ceremony takes place at 7.15pm and the colourful occasion usually attracts large crowds of people.

The origins of the ancient tradition remain a mystery but one theory is that it dates back to a time when Rye minted its own coins.

The Mayor Making meeting will commence before that at 6.30pm and it is expected that the current Mayor, Councillor Bernardine Fiddimore and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jonathan Breeds will both be nominated to serve a second term of office.
