A MEMORIAL service is to be held next Friday (June 22) in memory of a soldier who was killed in action in Iraq.

The event is being hosted by Robertsbridge branch of the Royal British Legion at Robertsbridge Community College to mark the 5th anniversary of Corporal John Rigby’s death.

The rifleman of the 4th Battalion The Rifles was fatally injured by a roadside bomb and died on his 24th birthday with his twin brother Will by his side.

He went to school at Etchingham Primary School before going to Robertsbridge Community College.

Corporal Rigby, who was from Playden, near Rye, and his brother Will became the first twins to reach the North Pole when they made the expedition at the age of 14.

He was due to have been promoted to sergeant in September 2007 and shared the same rank in the same battalion as his twin brother.

In January 2008 a tree was planted at Robertsbridge Community College in his memory.

Next Friday’s service starts at noon.
