There are usually plenty of spring flowers to greet Easter, but sadly the bitterly cold weather is hampering their blooming.

Good Friday tomorrow and at 9.30am St James Church Ewhurst Green there will be a special service to mark the day. And on Easter Day, again 9.30am at St James there will be communion service.

Staplecross village hall was the warmest place for many a mile last Saturday, both for the music and those who attended the Old Time Music Hall. Pat and Peter Smith gathered talented musical friends Alex Leigh, Caroline Turvey, Wally Close, Denis Cruse, Ivan Leigh and Beryl Powell (who played the piano, and also sang). The evening had Peter Elliot as Master of Ceremonies, who was a fund of jokes and stories in between the songs.

The audience sat at tables with glasses of drink, both alcoholic and otherwise, with a meal provided during the evening by the Chicks that Chop. The first half of the programme was a medley of choruses from well known songs of London. Wally Close, attired as a Boy Scout did a skit on “Be Prepared”, with Peter Smith, hardly recognisable with bowler hat and Hitler moustache reciting “Albert and the Lion”. The evening included many songs of yesteryear with Alice Blue Gown, Champagne Charlie, Joshua, Wouldn’t it be Luverley, and many others, finishing with We’ll Meet Again - and perhaps we all will! Proceeds from the evening will go to the Herdman pavilion project which is gradually taking shape.

The next meeting of the Staplecross and Ewhurst Green Women’s Institute will be held in the Church Room in Northiam Road on Tuesday April 2 at 2.30pm when Sue Hollings will be talking about her life as a couture dressmaker. The members hold craft afternoons on the third Tuesday of the month with many handicrafts involved from knitting to quilting. Anyone wishing for further information on joining should contact the President Ann Prodinger on 01580-831944.
