COMMUNITY NEWS and NOTICES: This column will be rather short on the ground this week, with news and notices of what’s happening within our community, - but I’m putting it down to it being the height of the summer season and a great number of people are all enjoying a well deserved holiday.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Always a group to appreciate the ‘Great Outdoors’ whatever the weather are the members of this friendly and active walking group. This week is no exception as there are two (2) very enjoyable but very different walks for us to enjoy. Walk No: 1 is planned for Saturday August 8th and is entitled “ A Walk in the Countryside” and will be a 9 mile circular walk in & around Battle, I imagine- as the meeting point for this excursion is Battle Railway Station. OS EXP.124. TQ755156. (SatNav TN33 0DE) at 10.00am.Train departs from Hastings at 9.31am and Warrior Square 9.34 to arrive in time at Battle. Please check B.R. summer timetable and possible engineering works. Sadly, parking charges will apply at Battle railway station. A picnic lunch is suggested and for all additional information please contact Janet, on 011424~ 420570, - who will be your ‘Walk Leader’ for this delightful outing. Walk No: 2 will still be within useful distance as it is a 8-9 mile circular tour of “The Two Valleys” and is arranged to take place on Thursday August 8th at 10.0am. The meeting place for this stroll is Winchelsea Railway Station, Station Road, Winchelsea. OS EXP.124. TQ899183. (SatNav TN36 4JU) A coffee break and a picnic lunch is recommended for this walk, always very welcome in this hot sultry weather of ours. Rita and Clive will be the ‘Walk Leaders’ of this meander and you may contact them on 01424~882674- Mobile 07969~446867 for all further details.

STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Strangely, unlike the previous weeks, there is only one (1) bowls match this week and that is due to take place on Saturday August 8th and will be an away fixture at Rye. New members are always warmly welcomed within this dedicated, but very friendly bowls club, regardless of whether you wish to take up the sport from new, or maybe you wish to refresh your skills or just be part of the group in a different role. The members will be delighted to make your acquaintance , so for all further information on what makes this bowls club, the popular club that it is, and what’s on for the rest of the season, please contact Eve on 01580~830107 or via her email at eve.goodsell@virgin.net

MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE: Trundling along our country lanes, once more this week, will be the very welcome sight of the Mobile Library Service little van. Halfway through the afternoon, it will arrive in Cricketers Field, Staplecross, at 1.40pm on Thursday August 13th. It will then depart at 2.10pm for it’s next stop within our parish which will be Cripps Corner. It will arrive here at 2.20pm and then depart at 2.45pm for it’s last stop at Windmill Hill, before finishing for the day. This little van is always eagerly awaited by the residents, as it caters for more than ‘book lovers’. It is a vital service to all those who live in rural areas and allows those who are not able to easily make use of the branches in the towns. It also allows them access to the Internet; Audio stories; DVD’s; newspapers and other bulletins and has many other vital uses. Libraries are more than just books, -- so please continue to ‘Use it or Lose it’.

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the Parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday August 9th. Trinity 10. at 9.30.am. This service will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Giles church, Bodiam, but a Morning Praise service will be held directly after at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross at 11.15am. Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there is any church matter on which he can help, please don’t hesitate to contact him - He’ll be delighted to help in any way he can. You may contact him either at The Rectory, Ewhurst Green, - or by telephoning him on 01580~830268 or via his email which is: Gordon.winchester@btinternet.com - If he’s out- and he frequently is, just leave a little message and he’ll return your call as soon as possible.
