Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet

Vienna Festival Ballet celebrates its 33rd anniversary with a UK tour bringing one of the most famous Tchaikovsky classics, The Sleeping Beauty, to the White Rock Theatre, Hastings on April 11.

The celebrated Austrian dancer Peter Mallek founded the company in 1980.

Notable for the strength of their dancing casts VFB have dancers including graduates from the Royal Ballet School, British, Australian and Italian soloists, and guest stars from Vienna and Japan.

The Sleeping Beauty shows off the technique and precision of the dancers in their version of the great classic.

The fairy tale set to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, stunning choreography and beautiful costumes, portrays the struggle between good and evil.

The wicked fairy Carabosse lays a curse on Princess Aurora, proclaiming that she will one day pierce her finger and die.

But the Lilac Fairy intervenes, and on the fateful day the princess and the entire palace instead fall into a deep sleep.

A century later, when Prince Florimund wakes the princess with a kiss, the palace also awakens and a parade of fairytale characters attends the royal wedding.

The VFB’s aim is to bring classical ballet to the public at affordable prices.

The company tours eight months a year, with approximately 200 performances, aminly in the UK, but tours abroad have included Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Ireland and France.

Tickets for The Sleeping Beauty are £19.50.
