Udimore

UDIMORE WILDLIFE AND GARDEN SOCIETY: After a period of inactivity, the group is now enjoying a welcome revival. Last Saturday morning, undeterred by a chilly northerly wind, some twenty members paid a most interesting visit to Bob Turgoose’s woodland near Cripps Corner. Bob provided an informative commentary on the present flora and fauna of the wood and the history of its human settlement and management. During the Roman occupation it was an important site for the excavation of iron ore and its smelting in bloomeries, many traces of which still remain. Most of the members then adjourned for a pub lunch (and a warm up).

CHURCH SERVICE: In St Mary’s this Sunday the 9.30am Family Sung Eucharist will be followed by refreshments and a social chat.

MESSY CHURCH: This monthly event, lasting just over an hour, will take place in the Hall at 4pm on Tuesday (May 3).

DISTRACTION BURGLARIES: There has been a recent increase locally in this form of burglary, in which one member of the criminal team keeps you occupied at the front door while another slips into your home and steals some of your valuables. Do be on your guard: don’t have anything to do with strangers who can’t identify themselves convincingly. Please report any suspicious incidents to Crimestoppers (0800 555111).

OTHER THEFTS: Thefts of tools and other equipment from workshops, garages and garden sheds have also been increasing recently. Please remember to keep such places locked, especially at night. To have various items of your property security marked, Neighbourhood Watch suggests you go to www.immobilise.com. This should increase your chances of recovering stolen items, if you suffer the misfortune of a burglary.
