I’ve now heard that the very enjoyable barbecue arranged by the Friends of St Mary’s on May 19 by the village pond raised £200 for the church maintenance and repair fund.
One current item of this work is the replacement of the flag pole, completion of which has been delayed while insurance liability is assessed. It would have been nice to have it ready in time for this weekend’s celebrations.
Inside the church, however, preparations for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee will include a wonderful floral display and an exhibition of photographs and other memorabilia of the past century in Udimore. It will be open for the strictly limited hours of 9.30am till 5pm tomorrow (Saturday) and 10am till 5pm on Sunday (including a morning service starting at 11.15am). This will be something very special, which you should be sure not to miss.
The rest of tomorrow and Sunday’s programme of celebrations have been widely advertised. It seems likely that the midday street party and lunch at the King’s Head tomorrow will have been sold out, but if you don’t already have tickets and would like to join the party do ring 01424 882349 to enquire for possible returns. For the 6pm Rockabilly Races at Parsonage Farm, food and drinks will be on sale from 5.30pm, the celebration party due to continue till 8pm. All proceeds from this event will be for church funds.
On Sunday, please be sure to be at the Hall at 2.30pm, to get ready for the Village Photograph, which will be taken promptly at 2.45pm. Following the afternoon celebration of children’s games and cream teas, ticketholders will need to be back at the Hall by 7pm for the celebration dinner and entertainment, but, as for the street party, it would be worth ringing up for possible returns (in this case, either 01424 882948 or 01797 226100).
One more event at Parsonage Farm: on bank holiday Tuesday June 5 the Tillingham Valley ride and walk will take place between 9.30am and noon, another chance to enjoy this beautiful stretch of countryside, either on horseback or on foot (with or without dogs). For more details, please ring 01797 222009.
