Village voice - March 7

News from Sedlescombe

IT MUST have been gratifying for the organisers of the Sports Pavilion fund to scrawl 'sold out' on their poster advertising the dinner at the Brickwall on March 14. The village has been very supportive and responded to the urging to join in the fun.

The latest report from this fund, written by Judy, says: 'Please support the Grand Draw in aid of the Sedlescombe Pavilion fund. Tickets are currently on offer for sale around the village and at the shop at 1 per ticket. The first prize is a luxury hamper, second 12 wines, and other prizes include an MOT donated by Tivoli Garage, picnic hamper, reflexology session donated by Julie Cameron, relaxing massage donated by the Yoga School the Ridge Hastings and bottles of various spirits.

All prizes have been donated so every 1 goes directly into the fund.

'The actual draw takes place at the Sports Dinner in the Brickwall on March 14. Thank you everyone who has shown their support by buying tickets and making the evening a sold out event. We have been given some great lots to auction during the evening, including a cricket bat signed by both England and Australia sides 1997, a half hour flight in a light aircraft, professional poker set for all budding or experienced gamblers, plus much more besides. Any further details can be obtained by telephoning 870344 or 870223.

'The sports pavilion fund group is working on many projects and as there will be at least one event a month in aid of the new building we have displayed a list on the village noticeboard. We hope this will assist other groups in planning activities and also to help in gaining your support by organising diaries.

'There is a Quiz Night at the village hall under the familiar format on Saturday, April 19. These are always good fun and full of surprises.

It's quite amazing how much knowledge we carry around tucked away in our brains which can be rustled up for the odd answer. If you would like to submit a team please ring Ralph on 80223.'

THE May Fair on the 3rd will centre around the Green and the Queen's Head. Marian Ham is involved in teaching the children special maypole dances to entertain on the day, with the crowning of the Fayre Princess also taking place. She will represent the village at the May Fair and the annual Fayre (June 6). Entry details for the selection of the Princess will be instigated through school nearer the date.

There will be regular updates on the May Fair over the coming weeks. Ralph Dellow has been working very hard to ensure there is a Maypole and to coordinate this event so please make a note in your diary. There will be craft stallsand there are a few left so if you are a craftsperson or know anyone who would be interested in hiring a table contact Judy Torrance on 870 344.

THE indoor boot fair last Saturday made 147.26 for the church. Hunger lunches are ongoing with one today (Friday), from noon to 1.30pm at the usual venue, 2 Forge Cottages. The cost is 2.50 per person for soup and bread.

THE annual general meeting of the village hall management committee is on Thursday, March 20, in committee room 2 of the hall at 7.30pm.

Officers for the coming year will be elected. Everybody is welcome to attend and take part in the election process. You are urged to go along and help in the running of the village hall. Further information and nominations for election to Reg Glew on 870 258.

TEA, coffee, cakes and Easter flowers will be available at St John the Baptist Church in Sedlescombe on Sunday, March 23, 1pm to 4pm and again on Monday, March 24, 10am-4pm. Both occasions are to raise money for church funds.

IF YOU would like something in the Observer Village Voice about anything you are organising or want to bring to people's attention you need to get it to me by Tuesday lunchtime. I do read what is in the Parish News bag but copy date for the News is now Wednesday lunchtime, too late for inclusion in this column. You can phone or e-mail me if you have anything (870 628 or sylvia.cook@tiscali.co.uk). The team now doing the Parish News would prefer not to receive information via e-mail, which makes sense now a number of people are involved not all of whom may have e-mail facilities.

WOULD anyone like to have the Saga Magazine passed on to them? I take this excellent magazine (winner of some 'best' magazine trophy recently) and when I have finished with it it's still in pristine condition. It seems a pity to throw it away so if you would like it passed on do have a word with me.

I LOVE the cartoons of the Telegraph's Matt and particularly enjoyed one of the Taliban saying to the other 'I hear Royalty's about' while busily painting their cave white.
