News from Westfield
LIBRARY: Today, depending on road conditions and the snow, the mobile library unit is due in Westfield at the usual two stops of Geary Place and Churchfield from 2.25 and 3.30pm respectively. There is a good number of people in Westfield who use this valuable service which demonstrates that books are still popular for readers of all ages.
FOOD: As has become normal practice, it is Curry night at The Old Courthouse this evening (Friday) with a choice of variety and strength accompanied by pilau rice, poppadom and mango chutney. Another excuse for a meal out, other than birthdays and anniversaries, is the forthcoming St Valentine's Day when The Plough has a special menu on offer, phone 751066 for details and booking.
CHURCH: At the parish church of St John the Baptist, Westfield, on Sunday, Holy Communion (1662) is at 8am., Nine Thirty Start (All-age service) with Holy Communion at 9.30am. then Matins follows at 10.30am. This is the third Sunday before Lent.
MEMORIAL TREE: It is particularly cruel for someone to uproot a newly planted special tree and for it to be planted as a memorial to a person who did so much for the people of Westfield, it is heartless. The Walnut tree, recently planted on the Recreation Ground with the newly installed play equipment, was pulled up and dragged down the road, leaving a trail of mud. Did anyone see this happening on Tuesday last week? Has anyone acquired a new tree in their garden and hoping for a crop? Or was it pure vandalism? BARN DANCE: Make a note on your calendar for the Community Association's Barn Dance at the end of February. Tickets at 5 each will be on sale from next week at Archers and Westfield News. The Reel Thing will be playing and helping the evening go with a swing. A ploughman's supper will be served but bring your own wine or beer and glass. Soft drinks will be available. Some prizes for the raffle have already been donated and Westfield News will pass others on to the organisers.
HUB: Following the article in last week's Observer regarding the grant for the drop-in facility, make a note to attend the Westfield Community Hub Launch on Saturday 4 April 10am to 12 noon at The Old Courthouse Public House, Main Road. All residents of Westfield are invited to drop in during the morning to find out more about what will be on offer. This is organised by the Action Plan Group who intend that this Community Hub will be open weekly on Friday mornings from 10 April.
MURDER: The 1st Westfield Scout Group held a very successful evening last Saturday in the Parish Hall when the Murder Mystery event raised around 350 for their funds. About 75 people made up 12 teams who tried to spot the clues to work out the murderer. After the short play, teams filled in their answer sheets before enjoying a break for supper. The players were then given a chance to produce their alibis before the murderer was named. As with all detective stories, there was a twist to the ending! Two teams tied as winners but everyone had a very enjoyable time.
SPRING: Don't despair, Spring has sprung in some places though somewhat hidden under the snow. Early varieties of daffodil have been seen in Westfield joining the bobbing heads of snowdrops and aconites.
The catkins are bobbing their tails too.
