News from Westfield
LIBRARY: Friday again, and the mobile library is due to visit Westfield on the fortnightly rota with the usual stops of Geary Place lay-by in Moor Lane from 2.25-3.15pm and then Churchfield, by the A28, from 3.30-3.55pm.
CURRY: The first Friday of the month means it is Curry Night at The Old Courthouse. A choice of variety and strength accompanied by pilau rice, poppadum and mango chutney, that's supper sorted. The following evening (Saturday) don't forget the Westfield Cricket Club is holding their Quiz Night at The Old Courthouse, teams of six at 2.50 each. A light buffet will be served consisting of sandwiches and crisps. The questions get underway at 7.30pm. For the karaoke night on Saturday March 21, tickets need to be obtained from Westfield Football Club or ask in Archers.
JUMBLE: The Scouts hold their Jumble Sale tomorrow (Saturday) in the Westfield Community Hall at 2.pm, admission 20p, where there will be bargains galore. Any contributions are welcome from midday as long as items are no bigger than a chair and not TVs or computer monitors.
PLOUGH: Tomorrow (Saturday) you have the opportunity to have a tarot card reading for 10 for fifteen minutes with Higher Spirits at The Plough on the Moor the merrier from 6pm. You could have a spirit or two from the selection at the bar instead at any time.
BARN DANCE: Tomorrow, Saturday March 7, at Westfield Parish Church Hall at 7-7.30pm start, there is live barn dance music, though not The Reel Thing, for a barn dance in aid of Kenya Street Scouts and Amani Orphanage, Kenya. Admission 6 (3 under 17's) includes a jacket potato dinner. For tickets phone 01424 210838.
CHURCH: At the parish church of St John the Baptist, Westfield, this Sunday the second in Lent, Holy Communion (1662) is at 8am, the all-age service, Nine Thirty Start, is at 9.30am and Matins at 10.30am.
WALK: This month's walk follows very quickly on the heels of February's but that is the way events on the calendar fell. This Sunday the group, including our four-legged companions, sets off from The Plough car park at 2.pm. We are suffering the March winds as I write, will Sunday's walk be in sunshine as pleasant as last month?
TENNIS: For those players who have not been playing through the winter, it is nearly time for the clocks to spring forward for summertime action on the tennis court. Before that, on Sunday March 15, the annual general meeting of Westfield Tennis Club will be held in the clubhouse at 12.30pm, again after a morning's play. The parish council owns the two tennis courts which can be found next to the Bowls Club opposite the church. They are available for public hire on Mondays, Tuesday mornings 9am-12noon, Wednesday afternoons, Fridays and Saturdays; the keys and bookings are at Westfield News in Chapel Lane in the mornings and The Old Courthouse from noon. Members of Westfield Tennis Club have access on the other days.
TABLES: I do agree with Sarah Raven that a table should have a cloth and flowers; the tables at the barn dance were set with daffodils for St David's Day. Every table was taken and dancing including the ploughman's supper was enjoyed by people from Westfield and beyond. Thanks to the members of the band, The Reel Thing, and Janice for calling so ably the evening went off with a swing.
SPRING SHOW: The show is now days away now we are into March. The Horticultural Society stages it in Westfield Community Hall on Saturday March 28. Anyone without a schedule may collect one from Westfield News or Archers the butchers. It contains all details of classes, including the Autumn Show, outings, who's who, prizes etc and the entry forms which need to be with the show secretary two days before the shows. There is no need to grow anything to enter as sections include home produce, handicraft, art and floral art for which flowers may be bought. There are more classes for the younger generation, without the payment of an entry fee.
WCA: A reminder that the next meeting of the Community Council is on Monday March 16 at 7.30pm in the Community Hall Dining Room. Minutes have been sent to members. Also now is the time to renew or join the draw which supports the Community Association. All details are in the recent newsletter.
DATA-LINK: Do you remember the scheme a few years ago when sticky green cross labels, personal information sheet and containers were issued? The idea was to put down your details for use by the emergency services, if the need arose, into a film canister which was then kept in the fridge. Three green cross labels are used: one on the canister, one on the outside of the fridge door, one inside the front door of the house. Is yours still in use with up-to-date information? I have a few of these left, and could do with the space, so leave a message for me at Westfield News for a kit.
