News from Westfield

TODAY (Friday), the mobile library unit visits Westfield in the usual places: Geary Place in Moor Lane and Churchfield by the recycling bins, 2.25pm-3.15pm and 3.30pm-3.50pm respectively -another opportunity to borrow books from a wide range, DVDs, videos and audio books.

SAVE THE CHILDREN: The annual Coffee Morning and Christmas Gift Fayre takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in Westfield Parish Hall, 10am-noon. This is among the first events for Christmas. Stalls include gifts, parcel wrappers, knitted items, cards etc.

Refreshments will be served and admission is 50p. This event is organised by the local branch of Save the Children Fund and they welcome your support.

SPRING: There are plans afoot to bring some spring colour into Westfield next year but help is welcome to try to carry out this project tomorrow (Saturday), 10am-noon, at Churchfield recycling bin area when there will be a limited supply of tools.

PAT ANGEL: Many are saddened to learn Pat Angel passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at home, last weekend.

Many passers-by on the A28 will have been used to the flowers for sale at the entrance to Moorhurst but since the closure of the home, Pat continued supplying people with flowers and vegetables from his garden in Mill Lane.

His funeral is due to take place in early November, followed by cremation.

CHURCH: This Sunday, at the parish church of St John the Baptist, Westfield, Holy Communion (1662) is at 8am. Nine Thirty Start, all-age service 9.30am and Parish Eucharist at 10.30am.

Next Tuesday at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, there is a film evening. 'Faith Like Potatoes' is based on an inspiring true story, describes how a Zambian farmer of Scottish heritage leaves his farm in the midst of political unrest and travels with his family to start a better life in South Africa.

WALK: The regular monthly footpath walks in Westfield resume this Sunday, meet outside the Beauty Room in Chapel Lane at 2pm. A fine afternoon will enhance the autumn colours for a leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll.

HONEY: Moyra Davidson was the 'honey' judge at the local beekeepers' show which took place alongside the horticultural autumn show in September and she will give a talk on Bees Foraging at Westfield Horticultural Society's annual meeting next Thursday, October 23, at 7.30pm in Westfield Community Dining Hall.

A pot-luck supper will conclude the evening for members and friends. A reminder subscriptions are now due though many members renewed at the show.

FLU JABS: At Westfield Surgery, there are open flu clinics on Fridays, October 24 & 31, both 1.30pm-3pm, for patients who qualify. Following the distribution of the partners' letter regarding proposed government plans, have you responded with your views?

MARKET: The popular Fairtrade and Local Products Market is on Saturday, October 25, in Westfield Parish Hall, 10am-1pm. This is an excellent source of early Christmas presents and all your shopping goes directly to the benefit of the producers, at home and abroad. Tea and coffee will be served.

CRAFT: A Craft Fair is planned for Saturday, November 8, in the Community Hall and tables are still available. This is a chance to bring your craft to Westfield, please call 01424 755721 for further details.

POPPIES: A door-to-door collection for the Poppy Appeal takes place in Westfield and the local organiser is looking for residents willing to help with a couple of hours or so.

Call 01424 754104 if you are available. When these collections take place, be aware to ensure the collector is authorised.

CHRISTMAS: With summer behind us, the evenings drawing in and the temperature dropping, Christmas is fast approaching and manyare making preparations. Richard at Westfield News has displayed his range of cards, though he thinks it is a bit premature.

However, cards for far-flung places in the world have to be posted this month. Once again, Richard will donate 20p from his boxed cards to St Michael's Hospice.

NEWSLETTER: Time is pressing on and items are required for the next edition of the Community Newsletter, due to be published on November 7.

There is an email address on page 2 of previous newsletters or on the agenda notice for next Monday's community meeting.

HASTINGS WEEK: This weekend, the two-day Hobbies and Crafts exhibition is at William Parker Lower School, 10am-4pm, giving the chance to find some special present for the coming season.

Tomorrow's (Saturday) programme includes the 56th National Town Crier Championships in Queen's Square, Priory Meadow, at 10.30am.

In the evening, the Lighting of Hastings Beacon at the top of East Hill is at 7.15pm followed by the Torchlight Procession at 7.30pm from the Old Town seafront, winding its way round the Old Town, Queens Road, Robertson Street back to Pelham Beach for the fireworks and bonfire at 9pm. The roads are closed to traffic.

On Sunday, the closing ceremony of the 10-day programme is at 4pm at the Town Hall, Queens Square.
