News from Westfield

ANNE NORRIS: Last Saturday evening, Anne passed away peacefully in hospital, as she wished, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

She will be remembered with gratitude and love as she was a friend and confidante to many and dedicated to the welfare of parishioners of all ages in Westfield and surrounding communities. Anne was well known for her depth of understanding of human problems.

Anne, and Noel, came to Westfield nearly 50 years ago to begin farming after Army life, and was soon very involved in local activities in schools, church and the community. Anne was a magistrate, a school governor and awarded an MBE in 2000 for services to the community, especially education in Westfield, Bexhill and Battle.

Anne had an extraordinary network of contacts and took great pleasure in introducing very different people to each other at her home. With her enthusiasm, initiative and eschewing many forms of bureaucracy, she set out to get the best results for local projects: witness the WCA Hall, the tennis courts, the refurbished Parish Hall and churchyard members of the community enjoy today.

Three years have passed since Noel died and Anne's funeral will be on Saturday, November 8, at Westfield Parish Church when all are welcome.

She will be buried in the churchyard, continuing her presence at the maintenance sessions.

MARKET: Once again, the popular Fairtrade and Local Products Market takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in Westfield Parish Hall, 10am-1pm, when producers, at home and abroad, will benefit from all your shopping.

CLOCKS: Well, that's it! Summer is officially over this weekend when the clocks fall back an hour and the evening darkness creeps up on us earlier, though not being an early bird, I'm told the mornings are lighter for a while. There was a good turnout for the planting of bulbs to bring some colour to Westfield next Spring. Thank you to everyone who helped to give us something cheerful to look forward to after the dark days ahead.

CHURCH: This Sunday, the fourth in the month, at the parish church of St John the Baptist, Westfield, Holy Communion (1662) is at 8am, Prayer Gathering 9.45am, followed by Family Service at 10.30am.

VILLAGE STORE: It is suddenly all change at the Village Stores which explains why many passers-by were unable to drop in last Sunday afternoon as a stock-take closed the shop for the afternoon. Sanjay after many years is leaving Westfield, so we wish him well for the future, and welcome Mr and Mrs Patel.

BLANKETS: Have you made an appointment to have electric blanket tested at Battle Memorial Hall next Friday (October 31). Call Maggie Cornish on 01424 457129 to book, there is no charge. Hastings and Rother NHS Primary Care Trust has also organised, from 10am to 3pm, free sessions for Stay Alive - Keep Well including Falls prevention, healthy eating, mental wellbeing, Trading Standards, pensions and warmth issues etc.

HALLOWEEN: This custom is officially next Friday (October 31), but some people are already in the mood while others do not wish to participate.

Posters are available from Sussex Police, and in Westfield News and places, for displaying in windows where the occupants do not wish to play. For the primary school-age members of the community, there is a special party in the Community Hall from 4pm to 6pm for 1 plus an apple. There will be Halloween type things-to-do but there could be a limit on access if the event proves too popular.

PLOUGH: Next Friday (October 31) is the Dare to Wear Pink Contest at The Plough Inn on the Moor. Entry is by a 2 donation for Breast Cancer Awareness and a 15 meal prize each will be presented for the best dressed female and male.

Tickets are now available for the Christmas Raffle to be drawn on Sunday, December 21, with proceeds for St Michael's Hospice. First prize is a Hamper, second 'chocs and bubbly', third 'chocs'. Please drop in for a booking form for the Christmas meal, three course with free glass of wine, at 17.95. These are being served from mid-November to Christmas Eve though bookings are essential.

CRAFT: Please note the Craft Fair on Saturday, November 8, has been cancelled as too few people are available. It will be on next year's calendar, so watch this space.

CHRISTMAS: A coach shopping trip is planned from Westfield to Romford Market on Wednesday, November 26. On behalf of Westfield Community Association, Joan on 01424 752463 is taking bookings now for the seats at 9 each.

WALK: The regular monthly footpath walk was nearly outnumbered by the number of dogs last Sunday, as Megan, Emmie and friends enjoyed the beautiful sunny afternoon to appreciate the autumnal colours.
