Exciting news of a very special award for St Mary Magdalene! Jeffrey Bridges writes: Next weekend is the Patronal Weekend for Whatlington Church, it being the nearest weekend to St.Mary Magdalene’s day, the patron saint of the church. On Saturday we have cream teas in the church between 2pm and 4.30pm, with parking available at the village hall, this will also be an opportunity to see the new items of needlework and to view what is now a winner of a Sussex Heritage Trust Award for the post fire restoration.

We attended a ceremony at Pyecombe on July 3rd with the Sussex Heritage Trust and the church was one of two winners in the ecclesiastical section. We have a slate plaque to affix to the building, as well as certificates and we are very please to have received this. This award is a credit to everyone who has been involved with the work of restoring the church.

On Sunday 19th we have a Patronal Evensong at 6pm, again with parking at the hall, please note that there will NOT be a morning service next Sunday, just the evensong, which will be followed with light refreshments served in the church.

It is now one week to our village Barn Dance and Hog Roast taking place on Saturday 26th July in a marquee on the field behind the village car park at 7.00pm. Hopefully the weather will have warmed up by then. As in previous years and in order to have enough and a variety of food the council would ask everyone to bring a savoury, salad or pudding with them. Reminder: you can bring guests, with them making a payment of £5.00 each, children under 16 free, as a contribution towards the event, this to be paid at the gate on the evening.

The council hope most people in the village will attend this bi-annual get together and do not worry if you have not already advised you are attending, just come along.

This coming week brings two colourful and intriguing events to the Village Hall. As previously advised, Helena’s Flamenco School of Spanish and Flamenco Dance is hoping to start some classes in the Hall. To introduce her work, there will be two preliminary events: On Monday, July 21st there will be a Flamenco Dance Beginners Workshop, from 7 - 9pm. Places cost £15 for adults and £8 for children. The age range is 9 to 90! Booking is essential; please ring 07963 959262 for information, or email helenadot@aol.com. On Thursday, July 24th, from 7.30 to 9pm, there will be a Flamenco Show, featuring Flamenco Dance, Song and Guitar and featuring Helena “La Leyenda” herself, Fernando Reyes, Tomas de Cordoba and members of the International Flamenco Company, Cancion Gitana. Doors open at 7.00. Tickets will be £12: for contact details see above. Places for both events are going fast so get your tickets soon!
