Whatlington

Our Village Barn Dance and Hog Roast will be held tomorrow, July 26th, starting at 7.00.pm on the field behind the village car park. Entrance will be via the farm track alongside the car park. As in the past if you are able to bring along a savoury dish, salad or pudding it will help give a more varied buffet.

The Whatlington church Patronal weekend was a great success, the cream teas went very well on the Saturday with almost £200 raised for church funds, Valerie, who organised the catering would like to thank all those who baked and otherwise contributed to the cream teas. The church was decorated with some lovely flower arrangements.

On the Sunday, the 6pm Patronal Evensong was very well attended, it was a lovely service and our thanks go to Robert Searcy for playing the organ. We had all the church doors open to allow some air to flow through as it was such a warm evening. The service was followed with a nice spread of light refreshments which were enjoyed by everyone. As warden I would like to say a special thank you to Valerie Bishop for all her hard work over the weekend in organising both the catering and the flower displays and also to those others who helped to make the weekend such a success.

Next week it’s back to normal with a service at 09.30, then on Sunday 3rd August we have some special events to mark the centenary of the declaration of war in 1914. There will be a talk in the church, given by local author Charlotte Moore, followed by a special commemorative evensong at 5pm which in turn will be followed by some light refreshments.

The parish council have been advised by The Highways Agency that they will be carrying out resurfacing work along the A21. The work will take place on several weekdays from the 4th August up to and including the 22nd August from 8.00pm to 6.00am and possibly one Saturday, 9th August. The A21 will be closed during this time from the Flimwell Crossroads to the A28 in Hastings; this is for safety reasons due to the narrowness of the road. There will be well sited diversion notices along the route which will change as the work progresses south. For further information you can telephone their Customer Care Line: 0845 6000414.

The first of two Spanish and Flamenco Dance events took place in the Village Hall on Monday July 21st, with a very successful Workshop that was much enjoyed by those who attended, who seemed impressed by how much they had learnt in just two hours! There will be news of the next event, a Flamenco and Spanish Traditional Dance show on the 24th, in next week’s edition.
