Cost of living: 7,000 households to receive £25 each from Crawley Borough Council

This additional payment is being made from the ‘Discretionary Energy Rebate Fund’, which was undersubscribed when the application deadline passed.

Crawley Borough Council was given £201,750 to grant £150 payments towards energy bills for those who were not eligible under the terms of the core and band A-D energy rebate schemes earlier this year.

However, this scheme was undersubscribed so the council has decided that the best way to spend the remaining money (around £174,000) is to give a payment of £25 to households in the ‘Council Tax Reduction Scheme’, as well as disabled people, students and carers (a total of 6,964 properties).

Of this figure, 1,318 customers will receive a £25 credit on their council tax account. The remaining 5,646 will receive £25 in their bank account by October 31.

Council leader Michael Jones said: “Despite a lot of promotion, the discretionary scheme was undersubscribed so I’m delighted that we’ve been able to reallocate the funds.

“£25 may be a modest amount but I hope that this payment provides a little bit of comfort to those who receive it and that it helps in some way with the cost of living crisis.”
