A first-half goal from Matt Harrold ended a three-game losing run and sealed Reds’ first away win in League 2 since October.

It poured more misery on Stevenage, who haven’t won in nine games, after sacking manager Teddy Sheringham on Monday.

But Yates felt a goal just before half-time allowed his side to protect what they had in high winds at the Lamex Stadium.

He said: “We just needed a performance of grit, hard work, determination and organisation and I got that.

“We scored at the right time. I thought at times we looked dangerous in the second half, but we could camp and play the conditions rather than worry about too much entertainment.

“It was vital we stuck together and got the right result and we deserved it.

“I thought the centre-halves were great, they dealt with everything. When you have gone three games without a win it’s important.

“We talked about platforms and little blocks, building blocks to put in place so that when we go to Accrington next week we are in a good place.

“The confidence the players get from that will be massive.”
