Keep alert for veteran radio

The readers miss nothing. I recently wrote to local newspapers across the country, explaining that an Internet Radio Station would soon be running a programme broadcasting stories of those who served in the Royal Navy, and would love to meet up again with their old shipmates. ‘Let’s have your stories and who you are looking for’ I asked. You printed my plea and wow have I got some stories!

We are looking for those who served on H.M.S. Ocean, the Shore Base H.M.S. Collingwood, H.M.S. Relentless and many more, with some lovely stories. A ‘Best Man’ looking for his shipmate and his wife once again. As with many cases, they lost touch when they were drafted to different ships.

Thank you local newspapers for printing my earlier letter. And if any reader missed the first one, who are you looking for? Which Royal Navy ships or shore establishments and when? And let’s have a story.

Angel Radio Isle of Wight transmits on 91.5 fm to the Isle of Wight and part of Hampshire and on the ‘Wight Fibre’ network, but is also transmitting on the World Wide Web on www.angelradioisleofwight.moonfruit.com. A ‘Nostalgic Radio Station’, it will appeal to anybody who enjoyed the music of the 30’s through to the 70’s and we would like to transmit any ‘Lamp Swinging’ stories and reunite shipmates no matter where they are in the world.

Email your story complete with name of the ‘oppo’ you are looking for, the ship or shore base and the dates to mike.crowe1@btinternet.com or write to Mike Crowe, Angel Radio Sailors, 7 Heath Road, Sandown, Isle of Wight. PO36 8PG.

The first of the weekly broadcasts will be on a Wednesday afternoon later this month with contributions from September 1949, through the Korean War and ‘C’ Class Destroyers on the China Station, to a Malta Story in 1968. And linked to each story, a piece of music of the time, just to turn the clock back completely!! ‘Nostalgia is what it used to be’ so find the station on your computer and stand by to hear your story.

What are the H.M.Ship’s Associations doing? When is their next reunion? Listen in to the latest from them too. An hour of nostalgia so be prepared to ‘Swing that Lamp.’ Not in any Association? Come to a weekend full of R.N. nostalgia, including a ‘Tot’ or two and meet others not in any Association.

Thank you local newspapers, the power of the local press is quite amazing, I think that some readers ‘read the print off’ their local paper, making sure they miss nothing!!!
