Rye Community Centre is able to go ahead with important safety improvements following a £1,350 grant from the Town Council.
The money will be used toward the cost of installing a new safety barrier alongside the community centre, at Conduit Hill.

An earlier funding application to the Town Council had been put on hold because councillors wanted to hear more about what the Community Centre Association had been doing to raise funds for itself.

Community Centre chairman Geoff Boudreau said: "We have been awarded a grant of £1240 by Action In Rural Sussex and are now seeking funding for a further £1500 to cover he quoted cost of the materials, such as bollards and railings.

"The installation cost is expected to be another £1,200 and this will be paid for through our own fund raising."

The community centre is one of the main venues in Rye and is used for public meetings, performances and as a base for Rye Film Club.

Rye councillor Ian Potter, who had previously questioned what the Association was doing to raise funds said: "I am happy to support this now."

The grant was uanimously approved by the council.
