News from Sedlescombe
I UNDERSTAND the Garden Society's Autumn Show went well last Saturday. Barry Bradbury, Show Secretary, has written the following report.
Several members of the team who set up the Autumn Show had to scrape ice from their cars - not a very auspicious start to the morning! We thought that the frost would severely limit the number of flower and vegetable entries but we needn't have worried.
The Show team would like to thank all those who helped make it a success. The apple tasting was very popular and the overall winning variety was Lord Lambourne.

The Society's annual general meeting is in the village hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 19, during which the winners of the combined awards (Wilson Perpetual Cup and the Guy Perpetual Challenge Cup) and the Banksian Medal will be announced.
The team is preparing the schedule for next year so if you have any ideas you wish them to consider let either Alan Olin (01424 870 007) or Barry Bradbury (01424 870 401) know.

We have already received some excellent suggestions but would appreciate many more before the deadline at the end of October.
In general, we wish to expand the entry items, in particular for the Autumn Show, and to include complementary activities in order to entice more visitors.

IT IS the annual general meeting season, clearly, because the Royal British Legion, Sedlescombe Branch, has its session at the Queen's Head on October 15 after the normal monthly meeting at 10.30am.
The annual meeting will hopefully be followed by a short presentation by a representative from County Office. The chairman and other members will be staying on at the Queen's Head for an informal lunch. Everyone is invited to come along.

ON Tuesday, October 28, it is the turn of the Sedlescombe Societies' Association to have its annual meeting.
Do remember that at this meeting consideration will be given to any requests for funds that have been received by the secretary. If you haven't put in your bid yet write to Judy at Asselton House soon (and certainly by October 20).
Your backing and support for next year's Fayre on June 6 will be gladly received.

THE Theatre Club is off to Bromley on Monday night for a visit to 'Shout'. The show has been highly recommended and will feature 1960s music which will take some of us back if not to our youth, to a time when we were a good bit younger. The coach leaves the Green at 5.45 pm.

ON Saturday, October 18, there is a quiz night in aid of the new pavilion. I hope you have registered a team with Pauline or Reg on 870 258.

SURELY flu jab time has not come round already? There are open clinics at the surgery on October 13 and 22 and November 5. The clinic on the 13th is an afternoon one, 2pm to 3.30pm, the other two are 9.30am to 11.30am. The benefits of flu jabs are well documented so do take the opportunity to give yourself a bit of preventive medicine.

SEDLESCOMBE WI has a meeting on Wednesday, October 15, at 2pm in the hall. It is the annual meeting. Competition is 'your favourite recipe' (with tastings). A warm welcome is extended to everyone, members or non-members alike. I believe I made an error recently in differentiating between our two WIs. My apologies if it caused any problems.

I HOPE all village groups and organisations have received their letter from the editors about making greater use of the Sedlescombe News. Do you have any good news, as individuals, you would like to share with the rest of us? Or sad news, for that matter. There will have to be a degree of editorial control of course but why not try us out and help to increase the content and circulation of our valued newsletter.

SOMETHING to raise a smile, I hope. "My wife sat down on the sofa next to me as I was flipping channels. 'What's on the TV?' she asked. 'Dust' I said. And then the fight started …"When I got home last night my wife demanded I take her somewhere expensive. So I took her to a petrol station. And then the fight started…"
