Bad night for football clubs

It was a disappointing night for Hastings United, Rye United and Sidley United on Tuesday.

Hastings and Rye both lost, while Sidley could only draw at home and none of them scored a goal.

Hastings' bid for a play-off place in the Premier Division of the Ryman Football League suffered a setback with a 1-0 defeat away to Wealdstone.

The only goal of the game came from the penalty spot during the first half. Hastings drop a place to fourth - the third of the four play-off places.

Elsewhere, Rye went down 2-0 at the hands of Loxwood in a hard-fought Sussex County League Division Two Challenge Cup semi-final at The Caburn, home of Ringmer FC.

League leaders Loxwood scored the only goal of an evenly contested first half when on-loan Horsham centre-half Eddie French headed home a 40th minute corner.

Rye had the bulk of the play kicking down the slope in the second half with Scott Ramsay hitting a post and Danny Leach having a good chance saved, but Damon Aston scored Loxwood's second in the 77th minute.

Rye could have dropped two places to fourth in the league as a result of their cup activity, but fourth-placed Sidley were held 0-0 at home by Wealden and third-placed Worthing United lost 2-0 at Storrington.

Full reports on the matches involving Hastings, Rye and Sidley will appear in Friday's Observers.
