Davis pipped in epic struggle

It was heartbreak for Mark Davis in his attempt to reach the final stages of the 2009 World Snooker Championship.

The St Leonards cueman lost the last two frames to be pipped 10-9 by Michael Holt in the penultimate round of qualifying on Wednesday night.

Thirty-six-year-old Davis, who saw off Peter Lines 10-6 earlier in the week, never trailed after levelling at 4-4 until right at the end of a seven hour 12 minute epic.

Provisional world number 44 Davis finished the morning session 5-4 ahead and then took the first frame of the evening session to make it three in succession.

A key moment came at 7-5 when Davis enjoyed a 50 point lead in frame 13 only to see it overturned and provisional world number 26 Holt was soon level at 7-7.

Former Benson & Hedges Championship winner Davis edged 8-7 and then 9-8 ahead only for Holt to scrape home just before midnight at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.
