Davis takes step closer to Crucible
Mark Davis has moved a step closer to reaching the final stages of the 2009 World Snooker Championship.
The St Leonards potter completed a 10-6 victory over Peter Lines in stage two of qualifying at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, on Monday evening.
He will now face Michael Holt over the best of 19 frames on Wednesday for the right to progress to stage three of qualifying from March 8-10.
Leading 6-3 after the first session on Sunday afternoon, provisional world number 44 Davis won two of the first three frames the next day to go 8-4 in front.
Provisional number 65 Lines took the following two to narrow the gap to 8-6, but 36-year-old Davis came through a tight 15th frame and sealed victory in the next.
He has a tough draw in the next round, though, because Holt spent four seasons in the top 32 of the official rankings before dropping out at the end of the 2007-08 campaign.
The first session of that match will get under way at 10am on Wednesday with the remaining frames to take place from 7pm.
Former Benson & Hedges Championship winner Davis made it through to the televised stage of the 2008 World Championship only to be beaten 10-3 by Mark Williams in round one.
